Smith Waheed Gbolahan Inter-Secondary School Debate (SWGISSC)

The Smith Waheed Gbolahan Inter-Secondary School Competition 2022 is an annual secondary school competition named after an ingenious past president – Dr Waheed Smith.

The program spurred from the great impact of the honoree and it provides an avenue where secondary school students can deliberate on controversial and crucial issues in a serious but friendly environment with the hope of providing effective solutions, while strengthening their intellectual muscles.

In lieu of this, the 2022 edition took a different dimension and the Panel session was included in the competition rather than the debate competition as it had earlier been focused on. The Panels session was to show the students that they can be at the forefront of national discussion rather than project a five minutes speech. It is to show the teens’ the best way to process their thoughts, communication and use of language through discussion.

To ensure the students are well grounded in the knowledge of panel session, they were trained for two days by two trainers each, in the art of public speaking and rudiments of panel session. In total we trained 140 students from 8 public and private secondary schools in Ibadan between March 21st to April 2nd.

The schools trained were

● Bishop Phillips Academy

● St.Annes Grammar School

● Reflective International College

● Front Model College

● Gracefield Model College

● Loyola College

● Wesley College of Science

● Yinbol College

On July 14 2022, the students competed and spoke on two topics while they were being judged on their content, comprehensiveness and other criteria. Alongside, there was a quiz Competition. 5 out of the 8 schools trained participated in the panel session competition.

The students were awarded prizes and incentives.
