JCIN-UI ORGANISES LANRE BELLO INTERFACULTY DEBATE COMPETITION

The JCIN-UI held her 13th edition of Lanre Bello Interfaculty Debate (LBIFD) competition on the 8th of November, 2024 at the First Bank Building, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ibadan.

The event kick-started by 10:45am with the recitation of the National anthem and the University of Ibadan school anthem. The anchors for the event were Shammah Oluga and  Oluwadamilola David. The Director of LBIFD, Adebayo Waphyqawt, gave the opening speech appreciating the presence of the esteemed guests and audience, this was followed  by the JCIN-UI President’s speech.

The competition was in two categories, debate and oratory categories and 17 faculties competed for championship in each category. The theme of the event was: “Empowering a sustainable future: the intersection of accessible education and technology” and all the topics in both categories revolved around the theme.

Mr. Kelechi Uchenna, the keynote speaker and the  CEO of Nigenuis, spoke on the topic: “Take Risks and Do Bold Things Now.” He enlightened the audience on the importance of education, taking risks and working hard to achieve one’s dreams and goals. In his words, “never stop learning, take risks now. Inconvenience yourself now with hardwork and prepare for a convenient future. Remember, the journey is long but worth it and education is the stairway for Africa to rise.”

The judges for the competition were: Professor Aiyede, and Professor Ademola Lewis, both from the University of Ibadan. The criteria for judging was read by Prof Aiyede. The competition commenced with the debate category and ended with the oratory competition.

The faculties that participated in the competition were: Agriculture, Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dentistry, Education, Law, Pharmacy, Public Health, Science, Technology, The Social Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Renewable Natural Resources, Environmental, Design and Management, Economics and Management Sciences, and Nursing.

The winners of the debate category were: Faculty of Clinical Science– 2nd runner up; Faculty of Law– 1st runner up; and the winner was Faculty of Dentistry. For the oratory category the winners were: Faculty of Education– 2nd runner up; Faculty of Science–1st runner up; and the winner of the category was the Faculty of Clinical Science.

The results of each category were collated to get the overall winners of the event. The second runner up of the Lanre Bello Interfaculty Debate was the Faculty of Science, the first runner up was the Faculty of Clinical Science, and the overall winner of the 13th edition of LBIFD, 2024 was the Faculty of Dentistry.

The best orator of the competition was Omotainse Eunice from the Faculty of Dentistry and the award of the best speaker was won by  Patrick Okelue, from the Faculty of Dentistry.

The event ended at exactly 5:20pm.
