Junior Chamber International Nigeria, University of Ibadan, organizes an annual cleanup project to commemorate the World Cleanup Day, which is targeted at reducing the incidence of improperly disposed waste and promoting a cleaner environment. This year, in the quest for zero waste, the project was themed WASTE TO WEALTH (W-2-W) and entailed:
- Declutter to Donate
- Upcycling Training
- The Cleanup Exercise
The project was held with the aim of achieving some of the Sustainable
Development Goals, which are:
- SDG-3: Good Health and Well-being
- SDG-6: Clean Water and Sanitation
- SDG-11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- SDG-15: Life on Land
The W-2-W first project was to encourage JCI members and the general public to declutter their spaces and donate them. Graphics were sent out from 1st to 15th September, 2022. This was done in order for members to cultivate the habit of cleaning their private spaces and disposing of things that no longer serve them.
The upcycling training saw both JCI members and Intending JCI members being enlightened and trained. Members were engaged in the making of upcycled materials at the Waste Museum Ibadan. Some of these upcycled materials were displayed at the Local Organization Night during the National Convention in 2022.
And finally, the CleanUp exercise which was carried out at Ojoo market had the aim of not just picking up waste but also sensitising people on the dangers of improper disposal of waste to their health and community.
About 700kg of general wastes were picked and sorted into recyclables and non-recyclables. One of our partners (Recycledge) bore the responsibility of recycling the Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) collected. As for the non-recyclables, they were picked up for disposal by the Oyo State waste management agency.
