Overtime, non JCI members have harboured a series of misconceptions about the organisation nd we believe these misconceptions have, to some extent, made them indecisive regarding joining the organisation. JCIN-UI has deemed it important to adequately address and clarify these misunderstandings. This article will address the major misconceptions non Jaycees have about the organisation.
● “JCIN-UI is only for the rich”
A number of people believe that JCI is an organisation for the rich and wealthy alone. This assertion is however wrong. JCIN-UI is an organisation for everybody and financial buoyancy is not a criteria for joining the organisation. The only fee made compulsory to be paid as a Jaycee is the membership dues which is the same in all other organisations on campus.
However, JCIN-UI prides itself as an organisation that is dedicated to promoting individual, business, and community development, as well as providing networking opportunities. In achieving its goal, several events, symposiums, seminars and webinars are organised to that effect and the majority of these events are not free. While every Jaycee is encouraged to participate and attend these events as they serve as platforms to learn, grow, network and connect with other people, they are however not made compulsory for the members.
While JCIN-UI is not only for the rich, it provides a unique platform to learn, grow and even promote your business if you’re a studentpreneur. Through dedication and active participation, there’s an endless possibility to the level of personal growth and development a member of JCIN-UI can attain.
In all, JCIN-UI is home to you in as much as you are dedicated, active and willing to grow irrespective of your financial status.
● “JCI-UI admission process is unfair; they are only after my money.”
This is yet another long held misconception about the organisation which bears no element of truth. JCIN-UI is an organisation that admits people based on merit. The admission process is both fair and transparent.
To become a bona fide member of the organisation, an applicant must purchase the application form for a non-refundable fee of N2k, write and pass both the entrance exam and interview session. Before the entrance exam is written, JCIN-UI organises a training session for the intending Jaycees to familiarize them with the organisation and answer whatever questions they may have. After which they are given materials, from which all the questions will be set, to study for the exam. The pass mark is 50%. Thus, any applicant who scores less than that will be automatically disqualified to proceed to the interview stage.
Applicants who pass the exam, proceed to the interview stage and after the interview, the applicant’s exam and interview scores are collated and if the aggregate is less than 50%, they will not be admitted.
It’s safe to say that every member admitted into the organisation passed both the entrance exam and the interview, having over 50%. JCIN-UI only admits members based on merits. The grading process is transparent and applicable to everybody.
Thus, to become a member of the organisation, it is essential to attend the training session, study the materials, and prepare adequately for both the exam and interview.
● “JCIN-UI is only for law students.”
As earlier mentioned, JCIN-UI is home to every student who is passionate about growth, development and making long lasting impact in the society. The only requirement that must be met before you can become a member of the organisation, is to have an aggregate of at least 50% from both the entrance exam and interview session.
It is no doubt that the organisation is home to a substantial number of law students, however this does not mean that it is primarily a law centric organisation. Every student, from every faculty and department, is welcomed to the JCIN-UI family.
In all, the Junior Chambers International, University of Ibadan chapter is dedicated to individual development, community service, business and innovation and provision of networking opportunities. It is an all encompassing organisation that provides the platform to learn, grow, network and connect with other people. It is a home to every student who is passionate about growth and development and making an everlasting impact in society.
